How to take care of puppies?

Raising puppies to a well adjusted and healthy dog requires commitment and a lot of love for your canine friend. But love and commitment only cannot guarantee your Success. You need to know some technicalities about raising puppies otherwise you will end up frustrated.

Baby dogs are blind just after birth so special care needs to be taken for three to four days after birth. Ensure that the pups are kept warm, and the environment is comfortable. Temperature around 90°F is most comfortable for the puppies.

Another most important thing is the mother dog should perceive the environment safe. Otherwise she will be tense and that will affect the puppies. Keeping the mother and the babies in a closed box will help to reduce the tension of the mom as the closed box will make her believe that the babies are protected from outside dangers.

Also monitor the diet of the mother dog, as her body produces milk for the puppies her nutritional requirement is very high at this time. So diet high in protein and other nutrients like vitamins and minerals should be arranged for the mom. The diet chart should be made keeping the dog’s likes and dislikes in mind.

Other than providing safe and comfortable environment the owner need not do anything for the puppies in the first four weeks of their life. After four weeks the pups will be able to stand, walk and play amongst themselves.

After four weeks you should train the puppies to eat solid foods. But you may not have success if you try to give them solid food without any conditioning. You need to train the puppies to have solid food. Initially give them solid food mixed with water or milk. Reduce the amount of water or milk step-by-step until the baby starts taking solid food without any fuss.
