Which breed makes best hunting dog?
Nature has endowed dog with abilities of a perfect and efficient hunter. Though our pet dogs do not hunt for living, dog’s hunting abilities are used by human beings in their hunting efforts. There are various tasks a dog can accomplish as an assistant to a hunter. Tasks like finding a game, tracking a game, retrieving the game, are done by dogs quite efficiently.
There are various breeds of dogs suitable for the purpose of assisting hunter. Some breeds are most suitable in retrieving tasks. And there are other breeds that can track a game perfectly. Locating a game in a jungle can be best done by yet some other breeds.
A Spaniel is a good friend of a hunter because it helps to find or locate prey. These dogs are trained to freeze when they are in close proximity to the prey. Normally their body direction points to the prey (most of the time birds of some species). This works as a signal to the man with gun.
Breeds like bloodhound are used for tracking prey and other animals. Heightened sense of smell helps these breeds to be almost flawless in their quest.
Retriever breeds like Labrador retriever and golden retriever are used to find the animal or bird their master shot from inside some dense jungle or out of some water body. Their oily coat lets them swim easily through the water to carry out their retrieval work.
